| The School To University (STU) Program at the University
of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) is a year-round accelerated
academic and extracurricular program that provides students with multi-disciplinary,
hands-on activities that enhance students' basic, cultural, and technological
skills. The STU Program is a collaborative initiative between UMBC
and Maryland's largest local educational agencies (LEA) to improve
student achievement and post-secondary schooling participation.
The STU Program provides an effective and engaging method for improving
student learning and achievement for students whose talents have
not been tapped by traditional methods of teaching. The program
is based on the philosophy that all children can thrive in a supportive
environment. To create an environment that students find supportive,
the STU Program begins with caring and competent educators and support
staff. All STU instructors are either certified teachers or graduate
students enrolled in UMBC Urban Teacher
Education (UTE). All STU instructors receive ongoing training
on child and adolescent development, developing hands-on modules,
use of multi-media tools, and classroom management.
STU provides hands-on, product-based lessons that students find
engaging. Sample STU activities include:
- Desktop and web publishing
- Researching college and career opportunities on the World Wide
Web
- Writing poems and essays for publication
- Using hands-on math to learn arithmetic, geometry, and algebra
- Student-produced videos
As part of each STU day, students also receive:
- Breakfast and lunch
- Art and/or music sessions
- Physical education
